Match Preview: Droitwich Spa (a)

Two of the Midland League First Division’s top six go head-to-head on Saturday as Hinckley AFC make a first ever visit to Droitwich Spa.

Third-placed Hinckley head to Droitwich, in sixth, looking to record back-to-back wins and follow up last week’s 8-1 win over Wolves Sporting with an impressive away scalp.

Doing so would strengthen their grip on third place with Droitwich one on three sides looking to catch AFC in the table.

They are eight points behind Hinckley but with two games in hand, and could go fourth with a win should other results go their way.

That would evidence their impressive start to life at step six for Spa, who were only promoted from Division Two last season. Key to that has been their form at their King George V Playing Fields home, where they are unbeaten since September.

Since losing 4-2 at Kirkby Road at the end of November, Droitwich notched up five straight wins before a loss at Shawbury. Last week, they came from 2-0 down against title chasers Ashby Ivanhoe to lead 3-2, only for Ashby to snatch a late point. They beat Pershore Town on penalties in the Worcestershire Senior Cup in midweek.

James Lemon, who scored in the defeat to Hinckley in November, is their leading marksman with 17 while Connor Collins has chipped in with ten.

The game also sees the league’s two best-supported clubs meet, with Droitwich regularly hitting crowds of 200 at home.

Droitwich play at King George Playing Fields, Briar Mill, Droitwich, Worcestershire, WR9 0RZ.
