Hinckley AFC Women ready for first match

Club history will be made this Sunday afternoon when Hinckley AFC Women play their first match.

The side’s preparations for their first season in the Leicestershire & Rutland League Women’s Division 3 began when pre-season training got underway early last month, and now they have the chance to test themselves against higher division opposition away at Asfordby 1999 this weekend.

Hinckley AFC Director and Women’s Manager, Dan Haydon, said: “We can’t wait to get started. We have some good players with pedigree in local women’s football and we are excited to be making history as Hinckley AFC’s first women’s team.

“Asfordby will provide a stern test for us ahead of a season which will be all about finding our level. It would be brilliant to see some familiar faces down to watch us on Sunday.”

Hinckley AFC Director Lee Sharrard added: “Everybody associated with the club is delighted to see the women’s team about to take to the pitch. We pride ourselves on being a community club and fielding a women’s team feels like a huge step in that direction.

“We’re confident that we’ll look back on this first match as having been a really important milestone for the club, and for the women’s and girls’ game in Hinckley.”

Sunday’s game will kick off at 2pm at Holwell Sports’ ground on Welby Road in Melton Mowbray. The Women’s pre-season schedule will continue with a home match against East Goscote next Sunday, followed by away games at Shepshed Aires (18th August) and Melton Vixens (25th August).

We’ll share further details closer to kick off, and will preview the season once league fixtures are released.
