Match Preview: March Town United (h)

Kids go free as Hinckley AFC return to Kirkby Road this weekend for the visit of March Town United.

After the new management team’s unbeaten start was ended at Godmanchester Rovers last week, Hinckley are now back on home turf taking on another side from Cambridgeshire.

AFC’s unbeaten home record, with three wins and three draws so far, helped put them in fifth this time last week but that loss to Godmanchester, coupled with March’s win in midweek, means it’s the Hares who now occupy that final play-off spot and there’s just a point between the sides heading into this weekend.

The opposition

Usually strong at home, March have actually been better on their travels this season, having won each of their last three away games all without conceding a goal.

They included impressive 1-0 efforts at both Atherstone Town and Daventry Town, and a 5-0 win at Easington Sports which marked their biggest in the league of the season so far.

But they also got back to winning at home in midweek too, putting four past Yaxley without reply to put back-to-back defeats, including a surprise loss to then-bottom GNG Oadby Town, behind them.

They sit fifth in the table now, but have played fewer matches than everyone else and will be third if they win those games in hand.

As was often the case last season, their strong defence, showcased in those away wins, has been the backbone of their success – only leaders Nuneaton have conceded fewer goals.

But they have plenty of goal threats too – Toby Allen and wide man Flo Tsaguim have eight apiece already while Rio Henson, teammate of Brady Middleton’s at Rugby Borough last term, has six.

From the dressing room

“We know what to expect from them – they’ll be quite direct but with good quality. We’ve seen some footage of them and have spoken to other managers about them. We should anticipate that every game in this league will be tough and this will be another difficult one. But it’s nice to be back on our home patch and playing in the way that we want to.

“These types of games, against sides also up there and challenging, will bring out the best in us. If you have aspirations to be up there, being in and around it, you have to treat every game the same.”
