After his recent injury, Hinckley AFC centre-back Joe Obi has decided to retire from football.
Having initially joined Hinckley AFC from Atherstone Town in February of 2023 primarily as a striker, he gradually switched more to defence and even had a stint in goal for 45 minutes of a league match against Easington Sports earlier this season.
Injuries have prevented him playing a more full part, but he did reach the milestone of 50 appearances for the club against Rugby Borough last month.
That appearance would prove to be his last, as he hobbled off with a calf issue in the second half which has ultimately led to his decision to call it a day ahead of turning 39 this summer.
And, having been famed for coming out of retirements in his time in non-league, this time he insists it’s for good, posting on X: “A combination of injuries, old age and just being a long way past my best means it’s that time again.
“Another retirement but I guarantee this is the last one. All the best to the gaffer, the lads, the fans and everyone at Hinckley – a class club to play for.
“No more years.”
Thanks for all your efforts in a Hinckley shirt, Joe, and best of luck for the future!
