Hinckley AFC take their four-match winning run to title-chasing Rugby Borough on Wednesday night to take on a side with a number of familiar faces.
12 points from the last 12 available have lifted Hinckley to sixth in the United Counties Premier South, and avoiding defeat at Kilsby Lane would take Joe Conneely’s side into the play-off spots for the first time since the opening day of the season.
But that winning sequence will face a stern test against title-chasing Rugby Borough.
The opposition
Rugby Borough have no fewer than five former Hinckley players in their ranks, having signed Danny Fraser, Matt Dawson and Harry Sawyer in the summer and then added Zach Tellyn and Brady Middleton from AFC since then.
They have had an impressive start to the season, winning 12 of their 17 games to sit third in the table. They are seven points behind leaders Aylestone Park, but have two games in hand.
Their two draws and three defeats have all come at home, though, where they were also knocked out of the FA Vase at the weekend in a 5-0 defeat by Premier North play-off chasers Heanor Town.
Key to their excellent start has been their defensive record, with Saturday’s loss an unusually bad day for their back line. In 17 league games, they have conceded just 13 goals – comfortably the fewest of any side in the division.
At the other end, Gez McGahey and Cyrus Bruce, the latter of whom left in September, are their joint-leading scorers with nine apiece but six players have scored four goals or more.
