Jepson delighted to get off the mark

Hinckley AFC manager James Jepson is delighted that his side have got their first win under their belts.

AFC scored twice in two minutes to overturn a one goal deficit at Nuneaton Griff, the first time they’ve conceded the first goal this season.

But they came from behind successfully to pick up their first victory of the campaign, remaining unbeaten in the process.

Jepson admitted it was a hard fought three points. He said: “Had we not won, it would have been a mediocre start. Yes we’d still have been unbeaten, but we don’t want to go three games without a win if we’re going to get where we want to.

“We showed real character to come from behind, and again to see the game out with ten men.

“It was the complete opposite to some of our other games. We didn’t have too many chances but we took them. It’s swings and roundabouts. They had their chances but Adam was excellent and they couldn’t take them.”

“So it was an important win, but in the end I think we probably just about deserved it.”

Jepson praised his younger players, saying they stood up to the challenge when Griff threw everything at them late on. He thinks that the younger players in the backline such as Adam Harrison, Kieran Harrison and Toby Moore are complemented well by the experience of Jason Lee.

He also praised Tom Maddison, who assisted the first goal out of nothing.

“It was a piece of real quality from Maddo, one of the best crosses I’ve seen in years. That’s what he’s there for, he’s got great deliveries.

“I’m pleased for him because he’s been playing at probably 60 or 70% fitness, but he’s been willing to play through that for the club. That’s the type of guy he is.”

The game also saw two debutants, in Jean Dakouri and Matt Antcliff. The former Rugby Town boss was impressed with the way both settled into the side.

“I thought the ox (Dakouri) was superb for us. We had to take him off because the ref told him that his next foul would have got him sent off, but up until coming off he did really well.

“Matt did well too, he was a real livewire and they struggled to handle his pace. He gives us a bit of balance and provides a different dimension, which means we can be flexible with our shape.”
