Nearly six months after their first round matches, Hinckley AFC and Ashby Ivanhoe finally play their League Cup second round match at the Welfare Ground this afternoon.
The sides played their respective competition openers way back on Tuesday 24th September – AFC beating league rivals Lichfield City while Ashby edged past Premier Division side Heather St John’s – both away from home.
And after the Midland Football League advised that fixtures this weekend should go ahead as planned, the two sides’ meeting is 172 days in waiting.
Both sides got back into action last week after a month-long break because of the weather, with Ashby edging a 1-0 win at Stapenhill and AFC playing out a goalless draw at Kirby Muxloe.
But the two meetings between the sides so far this season have given goals aplenty – a win apiece and an aggregate scoreline of 4-4 suggest tomorrow could provide action.
In the league, Ashby lie 13th win 34 points from their 23 matches – only Atherstone Town have played fewer games and only the bottom three have scored fewer goals.
Former Hinckley man Benn Minshull has led the way in front of goal for them with 12, while Sam Grouse has chipped in with seven.
They lost at Brocton in a league match on Thursday – and that’s who the winners of the tie will face in the third round with an away trip to the Badgers. The tie will go straight to penalties if the scores are level after 90 minutes.
