A number of legends of Hinckley football will come together at St John’s Park tomorrow afternoon in the first ever Simon Blyth Memorial Cup.
On top of being Hinckley AFC’s first friendly of their pre-season campaign, the match also brings familiar faces from Hinckley’s footballing past back together to celebrate the life of a true club legend.
Hinckley United favourites Stuart Storer, Dale Belford, Richard Lavery and Jamie Lenton will all take to the pitch at some point during the afternoon alongside former AFC captain Ryan Seal, while Dean Thomas will also be at St John’s Park as AFC take on their landlords to compete for the new trophy named in Simon’s memory.
For Carl Abbott, in addition to the game being a chance to welcome back some old faces, it is also a chance to look at potential members of his squad for the coming season, which will start with the Emirates FA Cup trip to Worksop Town.
He said: “We’re slightly weakened on Saturday with several members of our squad, including the likes of Lee Butler and Dom Smith, being on holiday, so the game gives us a chance to look at some trialists.”
The game is also Simon Lyons’ first chance to look at his Heather players in a game situation, the former Coleshill manager taking charge of the Saints for the first time.
