Nuneaton Griff are the opposition for the second half of Hinckley AFC’s Bank Holiday double header as Carl Abbott’s side travel to The Pingles Stadium tomorrow evening, kick off 7-45pm.
AFC make the short trip up the A5 to face The Heartlanders in a local derby fresh off the back of yesterday’s 4-1 win against Racing Club Warwick at St John’s Park.
Three goals in the final eight minutes earned Hinckley a first home win over a Racers side who frustrated AFC for large spells.
Now, Carl Abbott’s side will take on the side who finished third in the Midland League First Division last season, and have started brightly in this by winning three of their opening five games.
Like Hinckley, Griff exited the FA Cup at the Extra Preliminary Round stage, but they suffered heartbreak in losing 6-5 on penalties to Dudley Sports in their replay.
Mark Williams captained Griff to the success of last season, but will now line up against them as part of Abbott’s squad looking to walk away with all three points.
The match will also be Sean Williams’ 50th for the club, if he plays. Last season’s Manager’s Player of the Year has scored twelve goals in his previous 49 games, and will look to make a big impact as he reaches his half century of games for Hinckley.
Over the last two seasons, the sides have faced each other at St John’s Park on Boxing Day, with the last meeting between the sides being last season’s festive fixture: a hard fought 1-1 draw in which Ryan Slinn bagged a late equaliser for the visitors.
Nuneaton Griff play at The Pingles Stadium, Avenue Road, Nuneaton, Warwickshire, CV11 4LX, with the ground located behind the Pingles Leisure Centre.
