Abbo on Highgate Stalemate
Hinckley AFC manager Carl Abbott said he didn’t really know what to make of yesterday’s 2-2 draw with Highgate United.
In an even game with few real goalscoring opportunities, both defences came out on top. Abbott says that it was disappointing not to hold on to the lead given to them by Matt Gardner with twenty minutes remaining, but feels both sides cancelled each other out. He said: ‘I don’t know what to make of today, really.
‘It’s hard not to be bitterly disappointed not to have taken all three points given the position we were in, but I don’t think we were particularly great today. I don’t think they were great either to be honest, I don’t know whether we cancelled each other out or whether it’s just a long season catching up with teams.
‘Certainly, there’s mitigation for us that we haven’t played for two weeks. Our season is starting to get broken up a little bit now, more so than I would like it to be. We’ve got another lay off after Monday (against Heather St John’s) before the Studley game so this is what we’re going to have to contend with now.
‘You pick the real positives out of it (the Highgate game) – that the unbeaten run goes on. We’re proud of that, and we’re trying to take it to the end of the season and even in to next season. (To get a) top four placement, for the FA Cup, is crucial, and today’s game is a valuable point towards that goal.
‘One where we’re a little bit disappointed is the outside chance that Highgate maybe hit the skidpan and we can come in and make a late challenge, but that’s highly unrealistic so I think we’ll be pleased with what we’ve taken from the game today and we’ll look forward to Monday.’
