Match Preview: Heather St John’s (a)

One league record will have to go tomorrow when unbeaten Hinckley AFC visit former landlords Heather St John’s looking to end their 100% record.

AFC picked up their first win of the campaign at Nuneaton Griff on Wednesday, building on their two opening draws that mean they are still without defeat.

But tomorrow, that record will be put to its most stern test yet with a local derby against their former landlords – a free-scoring Heather side who not only are top of the league, but who have also won every game so far.

Despite that, manager James Jepson says Hinckley are going there to take all three points – and believes that if they can came away with a win, it would make it a good start to the league season.

Like Hinckley, Heather were without a game yesterday after being knocked out of the FA Cup in the extra preliminary round, but that is the only game they have failed to win this season.

Their latest victory came at Stapenhill last week when Simeon Cobourne came off the bench and netted both goals to turn the game around.

The former Coleshill man has scored more than double the goals of anyone else in Division One already this season – 11 in five games – having netted 75 times last season.

Jepson admits surprise that Cobourne didn’t move to a higher level, but says he isn’t Heather’s only threat.

He said: “He’s a very good player – but we’ve got 18 good players and we’re going there looking for the win.”

The two meetings between the sides last season yielded a win apiece – Cobourne’s hat-trick sealing a late win for Heather on Boxing Day before AFC returned the favour on Easter Monday with a comfortable 6-1 victory.
