Joe’s summer update: part one

Joint boss Joe Conneely has given a two-part summer update ahead of the players’ return for pre-season training this weekend.

Part two will be released later this week, but in part one he discusses the squad ahead of the club’s first season at step five.

Since the end of last season, Matt Hill, Chandler Pegg, Tom Weale, Brandon Bache and Declan Somel have left the club.

Conneely says while he didn’t want to lose players from the promotion-winning side, these were the departures he was most prepared for – the players based west of Hinckley with the club now playing in a more eastern league.

“The ones travelling the furthest were ones we thought we’d lose. It’s a shame but in football, the further up you go the more travelling you need to do and this league doesn’t suit them as much.

“We wish each of them all the best and hopefully they do well at their new clubs.”

Of the remaining majority of the side who won the Midland League Division One, Conneely is confident that most will be back at Kirkby Road for 2024/25.

Registration forms are available from early July and the club will confirm those players for the new season once they have signed forms.

“Conversations are going well. We’ve spoken to plenty of new targets and we’ll have new faces around for the first session on Saturday.

“We’re hoping we can get some over the line but we can’t sign anyone until July and we won’t announce anyone early because things can change, especially at this level.

“But we’ve spoken to the lads who are staying and we’re doing all we can to replace those we’ve lost and strengthen the group. We’ve given the lads a good platform to enjoy their football, we’ve had good conversations and hopefully they want to be with us for the new season.”

The joint-boss also gave his thoughts on the United Counties Premier South, the set of pre-season friendlies and hopes for the new season in part two to be released later this week.
