Hinckley AFC director Ron Ashby will be running this weekend’s Coventry half-marathon for Cancer Research UK in memory of Simon Blyth.
Ron turned 60 this year, and has signed up for six half-marathons in 2024 to create a “six for 60”- with this weekend’s in Coventry his second of the six and dedicated to a friend and fellow AFC supporter who passed away in 2017.
After Simon’s passing, the club wore a pink kit for World Cancer Day, and auctioned the shirts off with proceeds going to charity. Ron has one of those shirts, and will be wearing it for this weekend’s half-marathon.
He completed the Shakespeare half in Stratford last weekend, and faces a quick turnaround for run two.
Ahead of his second run, Ron said: “I’m dedicating this run to a good friend Simon Blyth, who was deeply associated with our football club.
“Simon passed away some years ago, and the club recognised World Cancer Day the following year in his memory playing a couple of matches in special pink shirts.
“I’ll be wearing my pink AFC shirt next Sunday, thinking of Simon and everyone else I know affected by cancer.”
After completing Coventry, Ron has a few months to prepare for his next run, taking on Kenilworth in September quickly followed by Northampton, Windsor and the River Thames half-marathons.
