Hinckley AFC have the chance to end the season with a trophy as they head to Walsall’s Bescot Stadium to face Whitchurch Alport in the Midland League Cup final on Wednesday, kick off 7.30pm.
After the heartbreak of a penalty shoot-out defeat in the play-offs, Hinckley now have the chance to head into the summer with a trophy in the cabinet after reaching the season finale.
And it’ll be AFC’s second appearance in the Midland League’s showpiece final in six years, after narrowly losing 2017’s final 2-1 to Alvechurch.
Manager Joe Conneely says it’s a great achievement for his side to be one of the last two standing – but wants it to be even better on Wednesday.
He said: “It’s a privilege to be in a final. We’ve done well to get there out of all the sides in our league and the one above. Hopefully we can finish with a bit of silverware.
“We’ll go there to try and win. It’s going to be a great occasion. It’s nice to be at a Football League ground against a good team.
“We’ll be the underdogs going into it, but we’ll try and win and put a few smiles back on fans’ faces.”
The League Cup showpiece will be Whitchurch’s second final in two days – they face Market Drayton for the TJ Vickers Shropshire County Cup on Tuesday, a competition which they won last season.
They finished 9th in the Midland League Premier Division this term, one place above Atherstone Town, who Hinckley knocked out in the semi-finals.
Whitchurch were also shoot-out winners in the semi-finals, against Lye Town, having also beaten Lichfield City, AFC Bridgnorth, Market Drayton Town and Haughmond in this competition.
Alex Hughes scored 23 goals this season and was their leading threat up front, while Jordan Evans chipped in with 12.
The match will be played at Walsall FC, Poundland Bescot Stadium, Bescot Crescent, Walsall, WS1 4SA. Kick off is at the slightly earlier time of 7.30pm.
