Lavs reflects on Copsewood win

Hinckley AFC player-manager Richard Lavery was pleased to get three points on the board but admitted the win over Coventry Copsewood at St John’s Park wasn’t pretty.
AFC were twice pegged back after taking the lead in the first half, with Luke Richards’  goal five minutes before half time proving decisive.
And with real goalmouth action sparse in the second half, Hinckley ground out an important three points that moves them up to fourth in the table – but Lavery said it was the result that mattered. He said: “I think I’ll put that one to bed!

“But as I said to the lads in the changing room, a win’s a win. We won 3-2, it could have been six, seven or eight but we hung on at the end. But it doesn’t matter how you win them, we’ll take three points.
“We went through the motions a bit in the second half, we created a few chances but didn’t really look like conceding.
“But it was a game of two halves. The first was end-to-end but the second just seemed to peter out a bit.”
That could have been down to playing less than 48 hours earlier, and the former Hinckley United captain acknowledged that playing twice in three days could have caught up with his side in the second half.
“We’re down to the bare bones. We had four subs today and we’ve got loads of games coming up. We’ve got a couple of lads who are not here, and who aren’t committed to the Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday games.
“Me and Tom were going to change it, but in the end we decided to not to and give the lads that were tired one more go and see how it went.
“So it’s difficult when you’re down to the bare bones but the starting eleven that’s out there is good enough to beat any team at any time.
“But there will be changes on Thursday, there will have to be because I’m suspended.”
That enforced change will mean a different defensive line-up, but Lavery isn’t happy with the number of goals his side keep conceding.
He says the key to more clean sheets will be building partnerships between players, and continuing with a consistent back line.
“I keep going on about the defence but we’ve not had time to work on things, and we’re always conceding two goals a game.
“We usually score more than we concede but I’m not happy. As a defender, I’m a part of that. I’m not saying it’s coming down to all the defenders but it’s mistakes all the time.
“It’s never a goal that opens us up, it’s always a mistake. And every time we make a mistake we get punished.”
