Hinckley AFC return to league action for their first home game of 2018 when Atherstone Town visit St John’s Park this evening, kick off 7-45pm.
Having started the calendar year with a defeat at Marske on Saturday, AFC have an early opportunity to put that behind them when the high flying Adders are the visitors.
And while Hinckley were in FA Vase action on Saturday, Atherstone were getting back to winning ways by inflicting Ilkeston Town’s first defeat in 15 games.
That strengthened Ivor Green’s side’s grip on third place in the league, four points behind leaders Walsall Wood but having played a game more.
Having not played a league game for three weeks, AFC have slipped back into eighth but have games in had on most sides above them, including two on Atherstone who lie nine points ahead of Richard Lavery’s side.
Having 29-goal Alex Naughton in their ranks has been critical to their success, but they have other threats going forward too – Alan Miller, Luke Shorthouse and Mitch Thomson all in double figures for the season.
Both sides have players familiar with the opposition. Former Hinckley midfielder Mark Williams now plies his trade at Atherstone, while fellow midfielder Josh Willis joined Hinckley from Atherstone earlier this season.
Indeed, Willis was part of the Atherstone side that beat Hinckley earlier this season, when AFC led for the best part of an hour until Naughton’s late brace turned the game on its head on a hot August Bank Holiday.
