Little over a week ago Hinckley AFC’s season was over but now they have the chance to end it with some silverware with tomorrow’s Polymac Packaging League Cup final against Alvechurch at the Bescot Stadium, kick off 7-30pm.
After being beaten in the semi-finals by St Andrews, AFC thought their exploits for 2016-17 were done at the end of April with the conclusion of the Midland League Division One campaign.
But after the Andrews were thrown out of the competition, tomorrow it will be Hinckley who take to the pitch on a Football League ground hoping to lift their second piece of silverware in two years.
It will, though, be arguably their toughest game of the season against an Alvechurch side who won the Premier Division title by a six-point margin. That’s despite picking up just 13 points from their opening ten league games of the season, meaning their last 32 league games yielded 25 wins and 79 points.
In front of goal, their biggest threat is Josh March, who struck 32 times this season, while former Hinckley United striker Danny Dubidat has also chipped in with 17.
While containing Ryan Seal (56 goals) and Paul Sullivan (27), Hinckley’s strike force will be a threat but they will be without Sam Agar who has army commitments in Aldershot. Mark Williams is also unavailable while centre half pairing Ryan Paddock (fractured eye socket) and Jamal Clarke (knee) are both absent through injury.
The only previous meeting between the two sides came in Hinckley’s inaugural season, in October 2014. That day Tyrone Clarke-O’Connell’s stunner wasn’t enough for AFC as a Gareth Evans brace sent Church through to the next round of the JW Hunt Cup.
The final will be held at Walsall’s 11,300 capacity Bescot Stadium, Bescot Crescent, Walsall, West Midlands, WS1 4SA.
