Hinckley AFC are proud to announce that our annual pre-season friendly against Heather St John’s will now be played for the Simon Blyth Memorial Cup.
The match has been the annual first game of pre-season since our formation in 2014 and from next season and beyond, the clubs will be competing for a brand new trophy.
Named in honour of club legend Simon, who passed away last week, the winning club in the friendly will lift the new trophy to mark the start of each new season.
Naturally, the game will initially be played at St John’s Park, but will alternate between venues when we return and find a home in Hinckley.
Hinckley AFC chairman, Steve Jelfs, said: “We felt this was an appropriate way to remember him at the start of every season. Simon was held in high regard by everyone at Heather, who had no hesitation in agreeing to this new annual event.
“Alongside naming the Clubman of the Year award after him, we now have a way to remember Simon at the start and end of every season.”
