Jozsef Jakab was the hero for league leaders Bromsgrove Sporting as they were victorious 3-1 to extend their lead at the top of the Midland League First Division to five points, ending Hinckley AFC’s three match winning streak in the process.
Jakab scored two first half goals and Sam Wills added a third just after the break to give Bromsgrove a three goal advantage.
A much-improved second half display from Hinckley was rewarded with a goal from substitute Greg Pearson, but it wasn’t enough to salvage any points.
AFC made four changes to their last outing at Lichfield City with Isaac Cooper, debutant Adam Goodby, Darious Darkin and Luke Richards joining the starting line up.
Both sides matched up well in the early stages of the game with AFC enjoying some good possession, while opposition forward Jakab threatened early with a header straight into the arms of goalkeeper Tom Cross.
Soon after, in the 11th minute, Jakab rose highest to glance the ball into the far corner from a Liam Spink delivery and give the visitors an early lead.
Despite the early setback AFC remained firmly in the match, and a Lee Butler cross just evaded runners at the far post as the hosts searched for an equaliser.
Club top goalscorer Richards then came agonisingly close to levelling in the 25th minute when his header from a Sean Williams cross struck the post and bounced safely to goalkeeper Chris Jay.
AFC continued their spell of pressure as Mitchell Tomlinson tested the goalkeeper with another header.
Against the run of play, the visitors doubled their lead in the 33rd minute as Jakab punished AFC again. He was left unmarked and headed home from a Wills corner.
Bromsgrove nearly made it three just before the break when the in-form Jakab blazed over the bar from just a few yards to leave the score 2-0 at half time.
The second half started with a similar pattern, the impressive Jakab continuing to cause danger with his aerial ability.
Wills added a third goal in the 49th minute with the pick of the goals, firing a shot from outside the box into the corner and leaving Cross no chance.
Then, Bromsgrove substitute Will Tibbetts nearly made an immediate impact after dribbling through the midfield, but he fired his shot wide of the goal.
Despite the scoreline, the tie continued to be well contested as the home side searched for a way back into the game with numerous corners failing to come of any serious goalscoring opportunities.
They were finally rewarded in the 83rd minute as two substitutes combined. Javia Roberts did extremely well to get past the full back and managed to find Pearson to tap home at the far post.
Despite a big push to the end, Bromsgrove held out to cement their place at the top of the league and put an end to Hinckley’s winning streak.
