Russ and Ron’s Snowdon Walk
On Sunday afternoon, two members of Hinckley AFC’s working group, Russ Abbott and Ron Ashby, took part in a walk up to Wales’ highest peak along with fans of other supporter owned clubs.
An annual event organised by Wrexham Supporters Trust, the walk has always proved successful, with fans of other supporter owned clubs invited to take part this year.
Around 100 supporters took part, with Russ and Ron both reaching the summit within ten minutes of each other after around two and a half hours.
Ron said ‘It was a lovely sunny day in the hills, raising money for the club and meeting people from other supporter trusts, such as Kidderminster, Wycombe and Northwich to name just a few.
‘I met Russ about a mile and a half from Pen-y-Pass, as the car park was already full at 9 o clock!
‘There was a lot of nice chat with other supporters on the ascent and a good feeling of community spirit, but the descent was a bit tough on the knees after such a climb!
‘There were some amazing views and it was great to be part of the walk.’
Russ said ‘Getting up at 5am wasn’t what I had signed up for! But getting to Pen-y-Pass as early as possible was important, as lots of people do the three peaks challenge on June.
‘As many people know, climbing a mountain is dangerous on an empty stomach (that’s my excuse anyway), so bacon and sausage were cooked up on a portable stove before we headed to the start point.
‘You are lulled into a false sense of security as the start is not all that difficult, but then you get to the miners track which is the leveller.
‘Once we got to the summit, the views were incredible. It was a great day and definitely something that I would do again.’
